The ATTINY85 Digispark Micro USB Development Board is an ultra-compact, budget-friendly microcontroller board designed to provide a small footprint alternative to larger Arduino development boards. It functions as an AVR 8-bit MCU running at speeds up to 20 MHz, with 8 KB of flash memory (around 6 KB available after loading the necessary USB bootloader). 
Because it incorporates a built-in USB bootloader—traditionally the Micronucleus firmware—it is natively recognized by computers. Users can program it directly through the standard Arduino IDE interface using only a micro-USB cable, eliminating the requirement for dedicated in-circuit programmers.

Hardware Layout & Pin Considerations
  • The USB Shared Circuitry: Because this board simulates a USB connection through software tricks using zeners and low-value resistors, Pins 3 and 4 are actively tied to the USB lines. If your code relies on USB execution or communication, these two pins cannot be easily repurposed for standard inputs or outputs.
  • Onboard Indicator Lights: The unit is fitted with two tiny SMD light-emitting diodes. A Power Indicator connects straight to the regulated 5V line. A dedicated Status LED maps directly to Pin 1 (or Pin 0 on select clone variations), letting you test scripts like standard blink loops right out of the box without any loose breadboard wires. 
Programming with Arduino IDE 
Uploading code to a Digispark board requires a slightly different approach than typical boards like the Arduino Uno. 
  1. Install Driver Software: Download and set up the digistump or micronucleus USB driver dependencies on your operating system.
  2. Add Board Manager URL: Open your IDE preferences and insert the third-party board manager URL provided by the developer community (such as the updated repositories managed via Spence Konde's ATTinyCore).
  3. Download Board Packages: Look up "Digistump AVR Boards" or "ATTinyCore" via the IDE Boards Manager and install the respective architecture packages.
  4. The Upload Sequence: Do not plug the board into your computer first. Instead, select your code and click Upload. Wait until the compilation screen displays a text prompt saying "Please plug in the device... (will timeout in 60 seconds)". Only at that moment should you insert the board into your micro-USB slot to allow the software to catch the bootloader window and inject the compiled binary successfully.
