The TSC230 (TCS3200) is a programmable color sensor module that converts light intensity into a square-wave frequency to detect Red, Green, Blue, and Clear colors.

  • Sensor: 8x8 photodiode array (16 Red, 16 Green, 16 Blue, 16 Clear)
  • Lighting: 4 on-board white LEDs
  • Optimal Range: 10mm to 100mm 
Pinout & Control Logic
  • VCC / GND: Power supply 
  • OUT: Outputs the frequency signal
  • S0 / S1 (Frequency Scaling): Adjusts output speed (Power Down, 2%, 20%, 100%). Setting S0=HIGH, S1=LOW (20%) is standard for microcontrollers. 
  • S2 / S3 (Filter Selection): Chooses which color to read:
    • Red: S2 = LOW, S3 = LOW
    • Blue: S2 = LOW, S3 = HIGH
    • Clear: S2 = HIGH, S3 = LOW
    • Green: S2 = HIGH, S3 = HIGH
How it Works
The LEDs bounce light off an object into the photodiodes. You cycle through S2 and S3 pins rapidly to read the frequency of each color channel. Because environmental lighting shifts readings, you must calibrate the sensor using a solid black and solid white object before mapping the frequencies into standard 0–255 RGB values.
