The KY-040 Rotary Encoder Module is an input device that measures rotational movement and direction with unlimited 360-degree rotation. It generates 20 pulses per revolution (PPR) and includes an integrated push-button switch.

  • Direction Detection: Uses two outputs (CLK and DT) to track rotation direction by sensing which pin changes state first.
  • Integrated Button: Pressing the knob down triggers a built-in switch (SW pin) by closing the connection to ground.
  • Operating Voltage: Works on both 3.3V and 5V systems.

  • GND: Connects to system ground.
  • VCC: Connects to 3.3V or 5V power.
  • SW: Digital output for the push-button switch.
  • DT: Digital output for direction data.
  • CLK: Digital output for step clocking
