While the massive L298N is designed for heavy-duty, high-current applications, the L293D is the absolute standard for driving smaller motors directly from a solderless breadboard. This classic 16-pin integrated circuit is a quadruple high-current "half-H" driver. In practical terms, this means it contains enough internal switching logic to form two complete full H-bridges. With just one chip, your Arduino, ESP32, or standard logic gate circuit can independently control the speed and forward/reverse direction of two separate DC motors, or precisely drive a single bipolar stepper motor.

The most critical feature of this specific IC is denoted by the "D" at the end of the part number. The L293D includes integrated flyback (clamping) diodes built directly into the silicon. When an inductive load like a DC motor turns off, it generates a massive, reverse-voltage spike that can instantly fry a delicate microcontroller. The internal diodes of the L293D safely absorb these spikes, meaning you do not have to clutter your breadboard or custom PCB with external protective diodes. Housed in a standard 16-pin DIP package, it perfectly bridges the gap between low-voltage digital logic and the high-voltage, high-current physical world.

  • Center Ground Heatsink: The four center pins (Pins 4, 5, 12, and 13) are all tied to Ground and physically connected to the chip's internal die, designed to safely conduct heat away from the silicon and into your PCB.
