The L3G4200D is a low-power, high-performance three-axis digital output gyroscope manufactured by STMicroelectronics. It measures angular velocity (rotational speed) across three axes: X (Pitch), Y (Roll), and Z (Yaw).
The original chip is obsolete, but it remains widely used by hobbyists, students, and engineers in the form of breakout module boards (like the GY-50). It has been largely succeeded by newer models like the L3GD20 and L3GD20H. 

Key Technical Specifications
  • Measurement Ranges (Full-Scale): User-selectable between ± 250, ± 500, or ± 2000 degrees per second (dps).
  • Resolution: 16-bit data output for each axis.
  • Sensitivity:
    • 8.75 mdps/LSB at ± 250 dps
    • 17.50 mdps/LSB at ± 500 dps
    • 70.00 mdps/LSB at ± 2000 dps
  • Communication Interfaces: Supports both I²C (up to 400 kHz) and SPI (up to 10 MHz) digital protocols. 
  • Operating Voltage: 2.4 V to 3.6 V for the raw IC. (Note: Commercial breakout modules usually incorporate an on-board voltage regulator allowing a 3.3 V to 5 V power input).
  • On-Chip Features: Embedded temperature sensor (8-bit output) and an integrated 32-level FIFO data buffer to offload data processing from the host microcontroller.

Most hobbyist breakout boards expose the following standard pin layout:

SDO / SA0 Output SPI Data Output / I²C Address selection bit.
CS Input Chip Select. Pull High (1) for I²C mode, Pull Low (0) for SPI mode.
INT1 / INT2 Output Programmable data-ready and threshold interrupts.
