The LCD 2004 20x4 character display with an I2C adapter is a versatile module that shows 4 lines of 20 alphanumeric characters each. By using the I2C interface (typically a PCF8574 chip soldered to the back), it drastically reduces your microcontroller wiring to just four pins, making it ideal for Arduino and Raspberry Pi projects.

I2C Wiring Guide
You only need to connect four wires between the I2C backpack and your microcontroller:
  • GND -> Microcontroller Ground
  • VCC -> Microcontroller 5V
  • SDA -> Arduino Analog 4 (A4) or Pi SDA pin
  • SCL -> Arduino Analog 5 (A5) or Pi SCL pin 
Setup and Programming Tips
  • Libraries: You will need a specialized library to handle the I2C communication. The standard LiquidCrystal library will not work directly. The LiquidCrystal_I2C library by Frank de Brabander is highly recommended. 
  • Contrast Adjustment: If your screen lights up blank or shows blocks, gently turn the small potentiometer (blue or white box) on the back of the I2C adapter with a small screwdriver until the text becomes visible. 
  • Backlight Jumper: There is a small black jumper on the I2C module. Leave it on to power the backlight. If you remove it, the backlight turns off.
