The MQ-6 gas sensor is a metal-oxide semiconductor sensor designed to detect flammable and combustible gases, specifically LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas), propane, and butane. It is widely used in DIY projects, home gas alarms, and industrial leak detectors.

How It Works
The sensor’s conductivity inside clean air is very low. When combustible gas leaks, the sensor's conductivity increases proportionally with the gas concentration. A simple electronic circuit or microcontroller can translate this change in conductivity into a concentration reading.
Module Types
The MQ-6 typically comes in two variations:
  1. Bare Sensor: Features 6 pins (2 for the heater, 4 for the sensing element) that require you to build a custom voltage divider circuit.
  2. Breakout Module: Usually has 3-4 pins (VCC, GND, Analog, Digital) and includes an on-board comparator and potentiometer to easily set a threshold alarm.
Important Considerations
  • Heater Operation: The sensor has a built-in heating element that gets quite hot during operation.
  • Pre-heating (Aging) Time: If the sensor has been sitting unused, it requires a "burn-in" or pre-heating time of 24–48 hours to provide stable and accurate readings.
  • Sensitivity to the Environment: Oxygen concentration (O₂) and ambient temperature can slightly alter the baseline reading of the sensor.
