The MQ-9 gas sensor is an electrochemical semiconductor sensor used to detect Carbon Monoxide (CO) and various combustible gases like Methane (CH4) and LPG. Commonly used in domestic alarms and industrial safety monitors, it requires a 5V power supply and provides both analog and digital outputs.
Key Specifications
  • Target Gases & Range: CO (10 to 1000 ppm) and combustible gases (100 to 10000 ppm).
  • Operating Temperature: -10°C to +50°C.
  • Sensitivity Material: SnO₂ (Tin dioxide), which has lower electrical conductivity in clean air and increases conductivity when exposed to target gases.
How It Works
The MQ-9 uses a temperature-cycling method to differentiate between gases:
  1. Low Temperature (1.5V): Used to detect Carbon Monoxide.
  2. High Temperature (5.0V): Used to detect combustible gases (Methane, LPG, etc.) and to clean the sensor surface of adsorbed gases.
Typical Wiring (Module)
Most MQ-9 breakout boards simplify implementation by including the necessary comparator circuitry. Standard 4-pin modules typically feature:
  • VCC: Connects to 5V
  • GND: Connects to Ground
  • DO (Digital Out): Sends a digital HIGH/LOW based on a preset threshold (adjustable via the onboard potentiometer).
  • AO (Analog Out): Outputs a varying analog voltage corresponding to the gas concentration.
Best Practices for Use
  • Warm-Up Time: The sensor requires an initial warm-up period of 24 to 48 hours upon first use to achieve accurate readings.
  • Calibration: To get precise ppm readings, the sensor should be calibrated in clean air to establish a baseline baseline resistance (known as R₀).
  • Environment: Avoid high-moisture environments, direct exposure to water, and continuous exposure to extreme gas concentrations, as this will degrade the sensor's lifespan.
