The SGP30 is a digital multi-pixel gas sensor developed by Sensirion, specifically engineered for indoor air quality monitoring. It relies on a Metal-Oxide (MOX) technology platform with a temperature-controlled micro hotplate to measure specific airborne compounds.

Key Capabilities
  • TVOC Measurements: Tracks Total Volatile Organic Compounds from 0 to 60,000 parts per billion (ppb). It reacts to paint, cleaning agents, cooking fumes, and organic solvents.
  • eCO2 Estimation: Approximates Equivalent Carbon Dioxide from 400 to 60,000 parts per million (ppm). This metric uses hydrogen emissions as a proxy for human respiration.
  • On-Chip Logic: Features an integrated microcontroller that tracks baseline calibration, performs error checking, and processes raw sensor values.
Technical Specifications

Hardware Connection & Pinout
Breakout modules, like those manufactured by Adafruit and SparkFun, regulate incoming voltage to simplify connections:
  • VCC / VIN: Hook up to the 3.3V or 5V rail on your microcontroller.
  • GND: Connect directly to the system ground line.
  • SCL: I2C clock line. Wire this to your development board's dedicated hardware SCL pin.
  • SDA: I2C data line. Wire this to your development board's dedicated hardware SDA pin.
Implementation Guidelines
  • Warm-Up Sequence: The sensor requires roughly 15 seconds after power-up to stabilize its micro hotplate before publishing accurate data.
  • Baseline Calibration: To maintain accuracy over time, the driver code must run continuously for at least 12 hours initially. This allows the built-in logic to establish an ambient environment baseline.
  • Humidity Compensation: Incorporating an external relative humidity sensor (such as an SHT31 or DHT22) improves accuracy. Passing live humidity variables into the SGP30 driver corrects readings against seasonal variations.
