The Sharp GP2Y0A41SK0F is an optical, analog infrared (IR) distance sensor engineered for short-range measurements. It functions utilizing the principles of triangulation via a position-sensitive detector (PSD) and an infrared emitting diode (IR-LED). Because it relies on geometry rather than absolute intensity, its readings are largely isolated from fluctuations in target color, reflectivity, or ambient operating temperatures.


Core Specifications
  • Effective Range: 4 cm to 30 cm (approx. 1.5" to 12").
  • Output Profile: Analog voltage. The voltage is inversely non-linear relative to the physical distance.
  • Operating Voltage: 4.5 V to 5.5 V nominal. (Can often interface safely with 3.3V logic arrays, but requires the correct supply voltage to meet datasheet performance criteria).
  • Current Consumption: 12 mA average (peak current draw pulses significantly higher during short bursts).
  • Update Cycle: 16.5 ms (± 4 ms) per discrete refresh cycle.
  • Form Factor: Dimensions sit compactly at 29.5 mm × 13.0 mm × 13.5 mm

Essential Hardware Customization
Because the internal infrared LED triggers in rapid bursts, the module causes large transient current spikes on your power lines. It is highly recommended to solder or bridge a 10 μF (or larger) bypass capacitor directly across the VCC and GND terminals as close to the physical sensor housing as possible to eliminate signal ripples and stabilize read precision
