The Sharp GP2Y0A710K0F is an extra-long-range infrared (IR) distance measuring sensor unit. It uses a triangulation method combining an infrared emitting diode (IRED), a position-sensitive detector (PSD), and a signal processing circuit. Because it relies on triangulation rather than time-of-flight, its readings are not easily influenced by the reflectivity of the target object, operating duration, or environmental temperatures.

Pinout and Wiring Considerations
Unlike shorter-range Sharp sensors that utilize a simple 3-wire system, the GP2Y0A710K0F uses a 5-pin JST connector interface. This configuration uses parallel power tracks to accommodate higher internal current spikes: 
  • Vcc Pins (2 pins): Connect both wires to the 5V DC power line.
  • GND Pins (2 pins): Connect both wires to the common Ground line.
  • Vo Pin (1 pin): Connects to the analog input pin (e.g., A0 on an Arduino) to read the voltage.
Important Wiring Tip: These sensors can introduce substantial electrical noise into your power lines. It is highly recommended to solder or bridge a 220µF bypass capacitor across the VCC and GND leads as close to the physical sensor module as possible.
