When size and power efficiency are your top priorities, the standard SIM800L GSM/GPRS Module is the go-to cellular breakout board. Unlike the larger 5V versions, this bare-bones module bypasses heavy onboard voltage regulators to achieve an incredibly small physical footprint. It is designed to operate strictly on a 3.7V to 4.2V power supply, making it the perfect companion for projects running directly off a single-cell lithium-ion or LiPo battery.
Operating on quad-band 2G frequencies, this tiny board packs the exact same communication punch as its larger counterparts. Using standard AT commands over a UART interface, you can command your microcontroller to send and receive SMS text messages, make voice calls, and transmit data to the cloud via a GPRS connection.
Perfect For:
-
Battery-Powered IoT Nodes: Wire it directly to a 3.7V 18650 or LiPo battery for highly efficient, portable cellular projects.
-
Ultra-Compact Devices: The exceptionally small footprint makes it easy to hide inside discrete enclosures, wearables, or custom micro-trackers.
-
Custom PCB Integration: An excellent, low-cost stepping stone for prototyping circuits before moving to surface-mount components.
