The SW-420 is a high-sensitivity, normally-closed (NC) digital vibration and motion sensor module widely used in the maker community for Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and ESP8266 projects. It functions primarily as a non-directional shock and shake detector rather than a true multi-angle geometric tilt sensor.
⚙️ Technical Specifications
Parameter  Specification
Operating Voltage 3.3V to 5V DC
Output Type Digital signal (0 or 1)
Current Drive Capacity >15 mA
Onboard Comparator LM393 voltage comparator
Default Circuit State Normally Closed (NC)
Dimensions 3.2cm x 1.4cm
🔍 How it Works
  1. Idle State: When the module is perfectly stable, the internal spring mechanism remains in contact, closing the circuit. The module outputs a logic LOW (0) signal, and the onboard status LED lights up.
  2. Triggered State: When a vibration, bump, or hard tilt occurs, the internal connection breaks momentarily. The onboard LM393 comparator pulls the output to a logic HIGH (1), and the status LED shuts off.
  3. Sensitivity Tuning: You can adjust how easily the sensor triggers by rotating the onboard blue potentiometer. Turning it balances the comparator threshold against ambient noise.
📌 Pin Configuration
  • VCC: Connects to the microcontroller’s 3.3V or 5V power supply line.
  • GND: Connects to the system ground line.
  • DO (Digital Output): Connects to any digital input pin on your microcontroller to detect state changes.
🛠️ Common Applications
Because the sensor operates on rapid, momentary state breaks, it is ideal for:
  • Anti-theft alarms for cars, motorcycles, and bicycles.
  • Door knock detection or home window break alerts.
  • Shake-to-wake interactive mechanisms in smart gadgets and toys.
